Ensuring student athletes get the care they need after sustaining concussions or other head injuries is the aim of a new law sponsored by Senator Bill Brady.

House Bill 200 requires local school boards to adopt a policy regarding student athlete concussions and head injuries that is in compliance with the Illinois High School Association. The IHSA requires student athletes to receive permission of a licensed health professional before being allowed to play the sport again.

“Concussions have become increasingly common in younger athletes as more children and teens are participating in sports and recreational activities. Too often, a young athlete tries to shake off his or her injury and keep playing,” Senator Brady said. “But even the mildest concussion is an injury to the brain and the student should be checked out by a healthcare professional before being allowed to get back on the field or court.”
