June 30, 2011
Governor Pat Quinn
207 State House
Springfield, IL 62706
Dear Governor Quinn:
I am writing you in response to the News-Gazette's June 26 article stating that the State has borrowed $1.176 million from 11 tax check-off funds during Fiscal Year 2011. I would request you return these funds immediately. It is unethical that charitable organizations in Illinois have been denied the funds given to them voluntarily by Illinois' taxpayers.
The last couple years, you and I have discussed the state’s fiscal crisis and possible solutions, both in face-to-face meetings and through the media. I shared with you my ideas about keeping taxes low, cutting spending, and encouraging job growth as a way to increase state revenues. Many of your solutions – higher taxes, increased spending, and measures that discourage businesses that provide jobs – were measures I could not support.
